John -

Last month, the House of Representatives passed the democracy reform bill HR 1, known as the For the People Act — although the bill did not explicitly mention climate change, it’s one of the single most important pieces of climate legislation.

Right now, our democracy is facing unprecedented challenges as state legislatures across the country are introducing legislation to restrict voting. And if they succeed, our climate agenda could pay the price.

Even though we’ve shown that climate legislation is popular across all demographics nationwide, this voter suppression could keep us in the governing minority — allowing the oil and gas industry to continue to set back our progress by decades.

Democracy reform and protecting the right to vote are fundamental to our agenda for climate justice. When elected officials are accountable to the voters, and not to billionaire donors like the fossil fuel industry, we believe Congress may finally take the action the climate crisis requires.

That’s why the For the People Act — which would protect the right to vote, overhaul the role of big money in politics, and end partisan gerrymandering — is a crucial step forward for the climate justice movement and for our country.

The House of Representatives took a huge step forward by passing HR 1. Now, the Senate must vote to pass this historic bill. Will you take one minute to write to your senators to vote yes on the For the People Act?

In 2020, we saw overwhelming voter turnout among climate activists, even amidst a public health crisis and mass voter suppression efforts. Our Climate Vote Project reached thousands of unlikely voters in states that were targeted by voter suppression efforts, and got them to the polls.

Now, we’re seeing a disturbing trend around the country — legislatures in 43 states have introduced bills that would suppress voting, disproportionately affecting Black and brown voters, and putting millions of climate voters' right to vote at risk.

With only a few years left to prevent the worst of the climate crisis, now is the time for bold reform that will make sure our democracy works for the people, not big-moneyed interests.

Our democracy — and our fight for climate justice — count on voting rights legislation like the For the People Act. John, tell your senators now: Vote yes on the For the People Act to reform our democracy.
