Susan Corke, director of the SPLC’s Intelligence Project, will host a conversation with senior research analysts Lydia Bates, Cassie Miller, Kristiana Dixon and editor Rachel Janik. They’ll provide a detailed overview of the recently released 2020 Year in Hate report, including key takeaways about how hate and extremism in the U.S. continued to evolve in the final year of the Trump administration. They will also address the legacy of the Jan. 6 insurrection and the challenges it poses for the Biden-Harris administration. Special attention will be paid to:

• Electoral extremism in 2020 and beyond, a threat that grew at an alarming rate over the course of the year and the election season, culminating in the deadly assault on our nation’s Capitol in January.
• How to spot radicalization earlier and how parents and schools can intervene. Social media and encrypted messaging platforms like Telegram are increasingly exposing everyday people, particularly young people, to hateful and dangerous rhetoric – with potentially catastrophic consequences.
• The under-discussed threat of “patriarchal violence” and how this framing describes the manifestation of multiple oppressions in extremism.

We will also reserve time to answer questions submitted by the audience.

The SPLC has published the Year in Hate and Extremism, an annual census and analysis of hate groups and extremist organizations, each year since 1990. In the most recent report, published in February, we identified a total of 838 hate groups and 566 antigovernment groups operating across the country in 2020.
