Friend, Today marks the 151st anniversary of the 15th amendment, the last of the reconstruction amendments passed to protect the right for African Americans to vote. The best way to commemorate today is to vote in the local elections that shape our communities. In our local elections we decide who will be our sheriffs, city council members, judges, attorney generals, comptrollers, and more. Our sheriffs decide who to imprison and who to free, which orders to enforce and which to ignore. Our city council members decide how to spend our tax dollars. Our judges determine whether legal precedents are set on kindness or cruelty. Our district attorneys and attorney generals decide whether to prosecute authorities who have abused their power, or to let them continue to take advantage of their positions. With your vote, you and your community decide who gets to hold these positions. You and your community decide who will hold responsibility for these roles and join you in building a community where no one stands alone. |
