Spotlight

After months of work by People For’s staff, leadership networks, and members to unite the Democratic caucus, on March 3 the For the People Act (H.R. 1) passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, moving this groundbreaking legislation to the Senate.

State-specific bills to suppress the vote — more than 250 pieces of legislation in more than 40 states — have highlighted the critical urgency behind this battle to save our democracy. The For the People Act is a once-in-a-generation chance to strengthen our democracy and negate all of these state-specific bills.

A New Era of Jim Crow

Georgia just passed — and GA Gov. Brian Kemp just signed into law — one of the worst, most restrictive voter suppression laws in the country … a true resurgence of Jim Crow in modern America. Hundreds of other bills just like it are making their way through state legislatures across the country. The underlying racism in what the Far Right is doing is not even subtle.

People For is waging a massive campaign by investing everything we have to stop these voter suppression bills from taking effect, but we’re running on fumes and we need an urgent infusion of resources immediately to get legislation through Congress that would stop these bills in their tracks.

Please chip in anything you can to help us close the $14,173 gap in our critical end-of-month goal — there’s too much on the line to scale back our efforts at this urgent moment! >>

This Month

This Women’s History Month, we’ve seen a dangerous trend of the Far Right disproportionately attacking President Biden’s nominees who are women of color, in particular Vanita Gupta and Kristen Clarke. To support these experienced, well-qualified nominees and dispel the Right’s falsehoods and attacks, People For launched a multi-stage campaign: #HerFightOurFight.

Make sure you check out our video briefing on the project, featuring People For President Ben Jealous, former State Director for the Department of Agriculture, Shirley Sherrod, and Maryland Delegate Jheanelle Wilkins!

Nearly four months into the 117th Congress, the Democratic-led majorities in both chambers have been moving quickly on legislation that would strengthen our democracy and protect our fundamental rights. But there is something on the horizon that could undermine all of this work: the filibuster.

We need to be able to pass vital legislation this year, and that means getting rid of this antiquated Senate rule. Watch our new video on the history of the filibuster and why we must eliminate it to make the progress our country sorely needs.

Clubhouse is an exclusive iPhone app that is accessible only by invitation and whose audio-only structure raises a unique set of moderation concerns when regulating real-time conversations, problems exemplified by recent situations where conversations have devolved into long, bigotry-filled diatribes.

Right Wing Watch reporter Karim Zidan sat down with People For’s Communications Director, Laurie Kinney, to discuss Clubhouse’s ascendance among the far-right and what consequences this has for social media as a whole.

People For President Ben Jealous joined Jane Fonda at her weekly activist virtual event, Fire Drill Fridays, to discuss all the ways that Big Money in politics is dangerous for the fight for climate justice as well as for our political system, and what we can do to get rid of it.

This episode’s focus is on the ways that Big Money in politics undermines our fight for climate justice by incentivizing politicians to do the fossil fuel industry’s bidding rather than listen to their constituents. Make sure to watch Jealous and Fonda discuss the grassroots efforts to get Big Money out of politics and identify the ways that the Biden-Harris administration could make a big difference!
