Dr. Georgia works at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and is one of our incredible COVID-19 researchers. Her project focuses on how the effects of COVID-19 impact the function, survival, and regeneration of insulin cells—which could potentially lead to the development of diabetes in people who didn’t have it before. The goal? Find out how COVID-19 attacks these cells to determine a strategy to protect them or reverse the damage.
Over 34 million Americans have diabetes. COVID-19 can still add to that number, which is why Dr. Georgia’s research is critical.
And for her, this research is personal.
“I’m motivated every day by the fact that my research contributes to fundamental insights that can lead to a monumental discovery, i.e. a cure for diabetes. This work also has a very personal connection for me—my grandmother has diabetes. Each of us are surrounded by people that either have diabetes or have a loved one with diabetes. If I can change the course of care, find a cure or significantly improve the lives of people living with diabetes, that’s incentive enough for me to continue with this important work!”
