After years of grouping both species of African elephants together, scientists have finally presented us with a first look at how the savanna and forest elephants fare separately — and the news isn’t good.
Savanna elephants are larger, marked by their curved tusks, and generally graze the open plains of Sub-Saharan Africa. They are officially endangered.
Forest elephants are smaller, darker, have straight tusks, and roam mostly in the equatorial forests of the continent. They are officially critically endangered.
A major culprit? An elephant poaching crisis.
We can’t let these precious elephants, or any species, go extinct, John. That’s why SEEC members call for increased funding for international conservation and anti-wildlife trafficking efforts every year during the annual appropriations process. John — By splitting up these two species of elephants, the dire situation of both species, and especially the forest elephants, has been laid bare. Poaching combined with human activity degrading habitats has brought them to the brink of extinction.
Many countries, like Japan, which still allow the sale and purchase of ivory, prefer ivory from the forest elephant. That’s why we need to do everything we can to restrict the wildlife trade — including passing Rep. Mike Quigley’s bill — and do more to increase U.S. support for international conservation.
