Law Enforcement News Police Surround Sylmar Apartment Complex After Coming Under Fire; Man Arrested Police Monday arrested a man who allegedly opened fire on two employees of an apartment complex in Sylmar, then shot at officers from the window of his apartment, triggering an evacuation of the complex. Officers responded about 2 p.m. to several 911 calls of shots fired in the 13200 block of Bromont Avenue, near Sayre Street. During a few of the 911 calls, gunshots could be heard in the background, according to the LAPD. Upon arrival, several residents of the apartment building directed officers toward the suspect and as they approached his apartment, the suspect fired at least once at officers, the department said. An “officer needs help” call was broadcast and LAPD officers from throughout the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles School police and Los Angeles firefighters responded and residents of the building were evacuated to a nearby high school as police kept watch on the suspect’s apartment, said the department. A police SWAT team and crisis negotiators arrived at the scene and were able to talk the suspect into surrendering peacefully about 4 p.m. MyNewsLA.com Man Stabbed To Death At Beverly Grove Home; Suspect Found Dead A Few Houses Away One man was found stabbed to death on the back patio of a Beverly Grove home Monday afternoon, and a the suspect was found dead in a nearby home a short while after. According to Los Angeles police, officers were called to the 6600 block of Maryland Drive, near San Vicente and Wilshire boulevards, at about 4:35 p.m. for a report of a residential burglary. When they arrived on scene, they found a man’s body in the back patio of the home — stabbed to death. Police said a knife was recovered at the scene. Soon after, officers surrounded the guest house on another property located just two houses down from where the stabbing victim was found. LAPD said the officers believed someone was inside, but refused to come out. A device, possibly containing pepper spray, was tossed into the home and the officers were able to make entry. Inside, they found the body of a second man. There was no word on a cause of death. His identity was also not released. On Tuesday, the LAPD confirmed that he is suspected in the first man’s death. CBS 2 2 Killed, Toddler Hurt In Wrong-Way Crash On 110 Freeway In Downtown Los Angeles; DUI Suspected Two people were killed and several others injured, including a 2-year-old child, in a suspected DUI crash early Tuesday morning on the northbound 110 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles, authorities said. The three-vehicle collision happened shortly before 2 a.m., just south of Ninth Street, when a Lexus SUV that was traveling southbound in a northbound lane slammed head-on into a Toyota Corolla, according to Sgt. Jeff Lane of the California Highway Patrol. The CHP shut down several lanes as officers and firefighter-paramedics responded to the scene. The deceased were identified only as a man and a woman, both 30 years old, who were in the Toyota sedan. The injured included another man and woman, who were hospitalized along with the injured toddler. The conditions of those three individuals were not immediately known. The driver of the SUV was among the survivors, the Highway Patrol said. ABC 7 CHP Officer Struck By Vehicle On 10 Freeway In South LA While Trying To Take Pedestrian Into Custody A California Highway Patrol officer was injured Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle on the 10 Freeway in South Los Angeles, authorities said. The crash was reported around 7:19 a.m. in the westbound lanes on the 10 Freeway between Arlington Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard. A CHP officer was chasing a pedestrian who was walking within the center divider of the freeway. During the footchase, the officer was hit by a GMC Yukon. "The officer exited her patrol vehicle and gave the pedestrian verbal commands to stop," according to a CHP statement. "The pedestrian ignored her commands and jumped over the center divider wall attempting to flee by running within the ... eastbound lanes." The officer was transported to a local hospital with major injuries, the CHP said. The pedestrian was arrested and is currently in police custody. The driver of the GMC Yukon that hit the officer was not arrested, the CHP reported. FOX 11 13-Year-Old Leads LAPD On Chase Across South LA, Parts Of South Bay In Stolen Car A 13-year-old led police on a high-speed chase across South Los Angeles and parts of South Bay in a stolen Toyota Corolla late Monday morning. The pursuit started in South LA before the suspect led officers toward El Segundo, Hawthorne and Crenshaw. The young suspect attempted to make a sharp turn in Inglewood when he hit the center divider and damaged multiple vehicles in the process. After several attempts, officers were able to successfully deploy a PIT maneuver near the intersection of West 135th St and Western Avenue in Gardena just before 11:40 a.m. The 13-year-old was then taken into custody. FOX 11 Video Police Looking For Armed Woman Near Lincoln Blvd The Los Angeles Police Department is looking for a woman they say is armed with a gun. Police say they received a call a little after 1:00 p.m. on Monday at the 800 Block of Lincoln Blvd. Officers say there are looking for a woman wearing a black jacket and white pants. No further details are available at this time. Venice Current Highlighted Social Media Post Robbery Victims Struggle To Reclaim A Stolen Watch After Thief Dies In Fall During Escape More than a year after a violent street robbery left an elderly couple severely injured, the husband and wife are now closer to reclaiming a Rolex wristwatch that was stolen during the assault. The watch has been held at a Los Angeles pawn shop that loaned the thief more than $16,000 and had demanded the robbery victims pay the store that amount to get their own stolen property back. “Almost my life going away,” Hasin Oh told the I-Team about the roadside beating and robbery that took place in Henderson, Nevada on Oct. 19, 2019. Oh was struck on the head, arms, and body before his prized watch was pulled from his wrist. His wife was beaten when she tried to intervene and suffered injuries to her legs. The 24-karat gold watch was a 75th birthday present from Hasin and Myungja Oh’s three adult children, who said it represented their father’s remarkable achievement of his own "American dream," and was a symbol of his accomplishments as he retired. Hasin and Myungja Oh immigrated to the United States from South Korea in 1975 with only a few hundred dollars. They worked delivery and service jobs before saving enough money to open a discount store, and later, bought, managed and built motels and hotels before retiring to the Las Vegas area. She called the I-Team after getting a demand letter from the pawn shop and getting nowhere with local police, who said there was little they could do because the dispute was a civil matter. NBC 4 Murder Suspect Released From LA Jail By Mistake Recaptured Detectives have recaptured a man charged with murder who was mistakenly released from jail earlier this month. Steven Manzo was captured during a traffic stop in Orange County earlier Monday. NBC4’s I-Team has been following the bizarre story about how a man accused of a killing managed to walk away. The arrest Monday was the result of an exhaustive effort by the U.S Marshals fugitive task force for the western states. Both groups have been working this case nonstop for weeks and tell us their efforts finally paid off. Multiple law enforcement sources said Manzo, who was booked on suspicion of murder earlier this month, was arrested during a traffic stop in the city of Cypress, in Orange County. The arrest was the result of weeks of legwork to try to find him, chasing leads that took investigators across Southern California and into Mexico before centering on a motel in Orange County. Days of stakeouts were involved, and the sources said Manzo was finally seen and his ID confirmed Monday. NBC 4 Boulder Police Officer Eric Talley Laid To Rest After Grocery Store Massacre A normally bustling section of Denver's core fell quiet Monday as Boulder police Officer Eric Talley's family, friends and fellow officers gathered in the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception to remember the man who died rushing to save others. "Eric was a man who gave his life," Denver Archbishop Samuel Aquila said during the funeral mass. "And Jesus has told us, 'Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.'" Talley, 51, ran into a Boulder King Soopers the afternoon of March 22 after reports of an active shooting inside. Boulder police say he was the first officer to run into the grocery store, and he was shot and killed inside. Nine other shoppers and King Soopers employees were fatally shot. The father of seven, Talley was an 11-year veteran of the police force and a devout Catholic, friends and family have said. A week after the shooting, Talley's coffin, draped in black, sat below the white altar under the cathedral's soaring ceiling as a choir sang the Solemn High Requiem Mass in Latin — a formal, beautiful mass that Talley loved, the priests said. The Denver Post Texas LEO Critically Wounded In Ambush To Be Taken Off Life Support A state trooper who was shot multiple times Friday night is not going to make it, officials said Monday. “After extensive life-saving efforts conducted by […] medical professionals, it has been determined that Trooper Chad Walker no longer displays signs of viable brain activity,” said the Texas Department of Public Safety in a tweet. “He remains on life-support until he can share the gift of life as an organ donor.” Walker had stopped to help a stranded driver when a man got out of the car and opened fire on the trooper, according to KWTX. Walker, who was hit in the head and abdomen, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Multiple agencies launched a manhunt for the shooter, who was later found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, reported KWTX. Walker is survived by his wife and four children. PoliceOne Public Safety News LA County May Qualify For Orange Tier As Soon As Tuesday Los Angeles County will learn Tuesday whether it has qualified to upgrade from the red to orange tier of California’s coronavirus reopening blueprint. However, even if it does qualify, it’s unclear exactly when the move would take place and whether any restrictions would be eased. Qualifying for the orange tier requires a county to average under 3.9 daily coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents, along with a test positivity rate of 4.9% or less. It has to maintain those levels for two straight weeks. L.A. County fell into the orange-tier range last week, with a case rate of 3.7 per 100,000 residents, and a testing-positivity rate of 1.8%. State rules require counties to remain in a tier for three weeks before they can advance. Los Angeles County officially entered the red tier on March 12, so it technically cannot advance to orange until Friday. Moving to the orange tier would allow L.A. County to lift all capacity restrictions at retail and personal care businesses. It would also allow bars to reopen outdoors, while card rooms and family entertainment centers could be cleared to resume indoor operations. CBS 2 Los Angeles City-Run Sites To Offer Over 90,000 COVID-19 Vaccines This Week Los Angeles' seven city-run COVID-19 vaccination sites and its Mobile Outreach for Vaccine Equity program will offer over 90,000 vaccine doses this week, including about 75,000 first-dose appointments and 16,000 second-dose appointments, officials announced Monday. The city is expected to receive 42,000 Moderna vaccines, 27,000 Pfizer vaccines and 22,000 Johnson & Johnson vaccines during the week, according to Mayor Eric Garcetti's office. A majority of the vaccines will be administered at the permanent vaccine sites at Dodger Stadium, San Fernando Park, Hansen Dam, Crenshaw Christian Center, Lincoln Park, Pierce College and the University of Southern California's University Park campus. Here’s What You Need To Know An additional 7.6 million Californians will be eligible to start booking COVID-19 vaccine appointments later this week. But whether they’ll be able to secure an appointment right away or weeks from now will depend on where a person lives and how many doses will be available there. Starting Thursday, Californians ages 50 and up in all 58 counties can officially get vaccinated through regular channels such as public health departments and health care providers. And two weeks later, on April 15, all Californians 16 and older will become eligible for a vaccine. Currently, more than a quarter of Californians have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and about half of the state’s population was eligible. Thursday’s dramatic expansion of vaccine-eligible Californians is expected to bring the total to about 25 million — or nearly two-thirds of the state.
