Dear John,

I’m thrilled to be sharing this new report, The Price of Voting: Today’s Voting Machine Marketplace ([link removed]) , a groundbreaking study on voting system vendors conducted by principal investigator Matthew Caulfield and a team of student researchers at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania:

The Price of Voting analyzes voting machine purchases covering some 50 million voters, drawing on the largest single public dataset of voting system purchasing agreements and contracts ever collected. The report demonstrates the overwhelming market dominance of three vendors, shows how the market share has changed over time, and provides unprecedented insight into voting machine vendors’ pricing strategies.

With voting equipment so central to the conversation on public trust in our elections, the report’s combination of quantitative analysis and case studies makes it essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the dynamics of the election technology industry.

When the Wharton School of Public Policy shuttered in 2020 and left The Price of Voting orphaned, we quickly decided to adopt the report as part of our evidence-based library of resources and bring it to the audience it deserves. We hope this report will help inform public officials preparing to acquire new voting systems in this critical “off year” - and engaged citizens like you who rely on our nonpartisan, data-driven information to stay informed.

With thanks,
Mark Lindeman, Acting Co-Director
