** The Early Care and Education Workforce and COVID-19: Why They Must Be Part of Policy Change

During this conversation roundtable, panelists will reflect on how to best navigate the COVID-19 pandemic to benefit both children and the early care and education workforce. Topics for discussion will include: the disproportionate effects the pandemic has had on the Latinx population, the indispensable role that regulated family childcare providers are currently playing during this crisis, data tracking federal, state, and local early care and education policies throughout the pandemic, and the intersection of COVID-19 and racial violence.

To honor Dr. Ruby Takanishi, this roundtable will focus on research, policy, and practice that has emerged in the past five years since her 2016 book, First Things First!: Creating the New American Primary School. Four brief talks—on the importance of alignment across the birth-to-five years and the early grades of elementary school, the need to focus on dual language learners, stories of positive impact via changes at state and local levels, and the role of digital equity in family-school connections—will set the stage for a robust discussion of how to build on Dr. Takanishi’s mission of creating a more equitable education system starting in the primary years.
