Yesterday marked the start of the trial of Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis police officer who killed George Floyd last year.
George Floyd was murdered in broad daylight by officers who were sworn to protect him and the community he’s from. His family deserves justice, and I am hopeful that their efforts in court will be successful.
But winning in court is not, by itself, a full measure of justice. His family also deserves to see police reform legislation bearing his name signed into law, so that more families don’t have to endure the pain his family still feels today.
The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act has already passed the House, but now we need the Senate to act, even if it includes eliminating the filibuster. Add your name today to call on the Senate to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to overhaul our broken public safety system.
Time after time, Americans have watched in horror as people of color have been unnecessarily targeted, harassed, assaulted, or even killed by police officers who are sworn to protect them. And time after time, justice for victims’ families has been denied or delayed.
The truth is that our broken policing system continues to fail our communities, particularly for Black people. During my campaign for president, I put forward a plan to reimagine public safety and ensure more accountability for those in law enforcement. Thankfully, many of the provisions we fought for made it into the bill passed by the House.
The Senate has yet to vote on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. Right now, Mitch McConnell and his buddies in the Senate are blocking that legislation. It’s time we take away his veto and allow the Senate to vote on this critical legislation. That means getting rid of the Jim Crow-era relic called the filibuster.
I’m calling on the Senate to end the antiquated and discriminatory filibuster and pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act immediately. Will you sign my petition calling on the Senate to end the filibuster and pass this important legislation to help us end police violence?
Thank you for continuing to speak out on this important issue. I’m thankful to have you by my side in the fight for justice.
