John,
Kim Elliot suggested I write you personally. My name is Dick Dolan and I lead The Trust for Public Land’s work on The Montana Great Outdoors Project.
You’ve seen words. You’ve seen pictures. Today, let me share numbers that illustrate why support from friends like you who haven’t made their first gift yet is critical to our ability to protect this and other public land for people.
At this point in the process, we need to raise $4 million to show that we are serious about protecting public access to these 130,000 acres. If we’re successful — and with your help I know we will be — The Trust for Public Land can help protect a wilderness and recreation area that will:
- Protect free public access to 24,660 acres of national forest and state land that would otherwise be landlocked and inaccessible.
- Maintain free, year-round public access for hiking, berry picking, mountain biking, snowmobiling, and other outdoor activities beloved by locals and visitors alike.
- Preserve 121 days per year of public hunting and angling that have been an annual tradition for generations of Montanans.
- Ensure a sustainable harvest of timber and the jobs — 20 full-time workers and 230 seasonal ones generating $30 million a year in economic activity — that go with it.
But this is not a done deal, and we only have one chance to make it happen. That’s why your help today is so critically important.
I’ve walked this land and talked with the people who rely on it. These 130,000 acres have been a working forest as long as anyone can remember. The thought of the Montana land stewardship tradition ending with these properties has emotions and anxiety running high for residents and visitors alike.
So much is at stake. Please don’t wait another moment to make a gift to The Trust for Public Land today.
Sincerely,
Dick Dolan
Northern Rockies Director
The Trust for Public Land
P.S. The communities of Northwestern Montana and visitors nationwide truly cherish the ability to access these lands. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that would ensure permanent public access to the 130,000 acres that define this area. Please help this land stay in public hands. Please give today.
