I wanted to make sure you saw this news because we helped deal a huge blow to the NRA last week. A Ninth Circuit Court upheld Hawaii’s open carry laws, rejecting the gun lobby argument that there is a broad unfettered right to carry firearms in public. This is an important reminder that as we are still fighting through tragedy, we are changing our broken nation.
We know that the NRA’s evil campaign can have real and deadly impacts – in fact they helped strike down an assault weapons ban in Boulder, CO, right before a gunman shot and killed 10 people with an assault-style weapon. But in this case, when the gun lobby tried to argue that the Constitution demanded a guns-everywhere agenda, they failed. With help from Brady’s legal team who submitted an amicus brief, the court properly held that the Second Amendment doesn’t entitle people to carry guns in public without reasonable restriction.
We are making major progress against gun violence in courts across the country, full stop. Wins like this are critical in our fight to end the NRA once and for all – and we need your help to keep the momentum going.
