There's no way around it: The recent mass shooting in Atlanta targeted Asian women and was a clear act of hatred.

They were mothers, business owners, veterans — valued members of their communities.

Like you, I was horrified to hear Capt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff's office justify the shooting by telling reporters that the 21 year old white male who murdered these women was just having “a really bad day... and this is what he did.”

It's past time we stop accepting white male fragility and misogyny as an excuse for murder — and it's past time we stop letting our lax gun laws turn a “bad day” into a mass shooting.

John, unless we take action now to dismantle the systems of hatred, racism, and misogyny that led to this hate crime, the list of lives taken will continue to grow.

I recognize the work ahead. That's why I can make this promise to you: I am fighting every day to keep our communities safe. That's why I co-sponsored the House's resolution condemning anti-Asian sentiment, and it's why I've worked alongside Democrats to pass comprehensive legislation to prevent gun violence.

But most importantly, it's why my team is working to lift other women up with me. When women rise to positions of leadership, they bring their communities with them — they fight to keep our children safe, support our families, and serve as a voice for us when tragedies like this occur.

I know you're feeling outraged and worried, but today, I hope you feel inspired to demand change, because we can't keep pretending there's nothing we can do.

We want to elevate the voices of AAPI women, Black women, Latinx women, and women of all backgrounds in elected offices nationwide. We want to empower women to fight for their communities in the House, Senate, and all places where decisions are being made.

We want to put an end to the so-called “bad days” that result in women being murdered in Atlanta and cities across our country. Because it starts and ends with us.

If you're able, if you're feeling energized to be the change and create a safer country for little girls, Asian American women, and women everywhere, will you contribute any amount that seems right to you now to drive our efforts? You can give here: [link removed]

Thank you for taking time out of your day to read this, for choosing hope with me, and for not letting this tragedy be swept under the rug,

-Mary Gay
