John, the Derek Chauvin trial started today.
This will be a tough week for many of us. In a lot of ways, it’s forcing us to revisit and relive the barbaric murder of George Floyd.
It was a modern-day lynching at the hands of police.
But let’s back up for a second – and talk about why Derek Chauvin thought he could kill George Floyd in the first place, why he thought he actually had a right to do whatever he wanted with this Black man’s life, and face no consequences.
This is why: because of decades of reinforcement.
For too long, police have murdered and maimed our people without consequences. The result? Police believe that they live above the law. Because in many ways, they have been.
That is exactly why we formed Real Justice – to change that.
That is why we have been fighting tooth and nail to elect district attorneys across the country who WILL hold police accountable.
That is why we have been organizing day and night, crafting campaign materials, raising funds, organizing volunteers, and bending over backwards to ensure that all our work to help these district attorneys is unassailable.
The district attorneys who we have elected are delivering. They are prosecuting crooked cops.
Why do you think that police groups are throwing millions of dollars into these races to try to stop us?
Because our strategy is working. And they hate it.
John, we have a handful of races coming up fast, and we don’t have much time to make sure that this next round of district attorney candidates can win – and carry this mission forward. To hold police accountable and change our justice system from the inside out.
This system isn’t going to change overnight. But we can — and will — claw our way towards progress. City by city, county by county, state by state.
And we’ll do it together.
In solidarity,
Real Justice
