PFLAG Connects

Dear John:

This week, we honor Transgender Day of Visibility--TDOV--on Wednesday, March 31st. We have a number of ways to connect, through Support, Education, and Advocacy--in support of our trans and nonbinary loved ones. Check them all out below, and then join us for one, some, or all of them!

Education

Three Steps to Being a Better Ally to Trans and Nonbinary People (While You’re Stuck at Home)

  1. Learn: Check out this personal piece on Medium by PFLAG National Western Region Chapter Engagement Coordinator Rakhel Silverman about honoring nonbinary people by using their correct pronouns.  Then visit straightforequality.org/trans to learn more about what you can do to be a better ally to individuals who identify as transgender or nonbinary, no matter where you are on your ally journey.
  2. Watch: Check out this great PFLAG Academy Online On Demand learning session, “Supporting Trans & Nonbinary Loved Ones: What Would You Do?” In this session, we review the core learnings for people who want to be allies to their trans and nonbinary friends and family and then put what they’ve learned to work, navigating real-world interactions.
  3. Share: Use social media to share with your friends and family what you plan to do as a trans ally on Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) this Wednesday, March 31. You can use the “As an ally to the trans community I will…” cards from PFLAG’s Straight for Equality program to help you get started. You can also share last week’s Something to Talk About Live, where PFLAG leaders Diego Sanchez and Jamelle Dooley talked about the impact and significance of the FX show POSE.

Advocacy

Take Action: Equality Act Phone Banks

PFLAG National is hosting several phone banking events, offering an opportunity to talk to voters in target states and patch them through to their Senators’ offices to urge them to vote YES on the Equality Act. Never phone banked before? No worries! Our partner organization, The NEAT, provides in-depth training videos to get you comfortable with using the phone bank tool, and our Chapter Engagement Coordinators will be there to answer questions and make sure you’re comfortable.

RSVP to one--or more--of the following phone banking events, and help us get out the YES votes for the Equality Act!

Something to Talk About...Live!

Join PFLAG National live this Thursday, April 1st at 4:30 PM ET/1:30 PM for Something to Talk About Live. This week, we’ll be discussing "A year at home has forced many LGBTQ college students ‘back into the closet’," by Laura Newberry.

You can watch live on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, or LinkedIn

For more information, including a link to this week's article and the questions, visit straightforequality.org/something-to-talk-about-live-april-1-2021.
