Dear John,
Last Thursday, Georgia Republican Governor Brian Kemp signed sweeping voter suppression legislation ... And then a Black Democratic state legislator was arrested for trying to attend the bill signing ceremony.
This law makes it harder to vote by mail. It makes it harder to vote early. It bans drop box voting entirely. It makes lines longer to vote on Election Day. The bill even makes it a crime to pass out water to people waiting in line to vote.
Strong federal voting rights bills that would preempt Georgia's Jim Crow voter suppression law have passed the House of Representatives, but Senate Republicans will never compromise on any version of voting rights.
We can preserve the filibuster, or we can preserve American democracy. There is no middle ground. Will you make a donation and help fight back to stop these attacks on our democracy? [[link removed]]
Let's not mince words: Republicans have given up on legitimately winning elections. They are trying to cheat their way to victory by stopping Black people from voting, and they are doing it openly.
But Republicans won't get away with this unless Democrats allow it by refusing to end the filibuster and pass federal voter protection laws.
The filibuster was popularized during Jim Crow by Southern senators seeking to block civil rights legislation. It's serving the same function today. Worse yet, Georgia's voter suppression law is only the beginning. More than 250 voter suppression bills have been introduced in states across the country.
There's only one way we can be sure to stop these laws and save our teetering democracy: End the filibuster and pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.
We've built a massive following across social media, including an unusually large number of persuadable conservatives and young people on Instagram and TikTok. Now we need to keep growing that audience, raising awareness about the danger to our democracy, and mobilizing people to demand voting rights legislation and end the filibuster.
Please donate whatever you can today to Inequality Media Civic Action and help stop Republican voter suppression. [[link removed]]
