“Entrepreneurs succeed when they provide a product that meets a real need,” says TPPF’s Bill Peacock. “Under socialism, government expands to control the levers of economic activity. Suddenly, individual needs don’t matter; the result is always failure.

Debt and Black Students

What to Know: The student debt crisis is worse for African-American ([link removed] ) students than any other demographic.

The TPPF Take: Students with high levels of debt are often poorly served by their universities—because there are no negative consequences for the universities themselves.

“As the White House noted recently, ‘The current system provides institutions of higher education with few incentives to control costs and saddles parents and graduate students with debt with little attention to borrowers’ likely ability to repay,” says TPPF’s Tom Lindsay. “Institutions that accept federal funds should bear some of the risk associated with charging students tens of thousands of dollars for degrees that will never lead to jobs that can repay those loans.”

What’s the Real Health Emergency?

What to Know: The Australia Medical Association has declared climate change ([link removed] ) a health emergency.

The TPPF Take: Lack of reliable and affordable energy is the real health crisis.

“Even as Australia—and some presidential candidates—say climate change is a health hazard, the facts show that high energy prices have a measurable effect on health and mortality,” says TPPF’s Katie Tahuahua. “The key to safeguarding human health isn’t some quixotic combat against a climate that has always changed and will always change. The real key is access to reliable, affordable, and abundant energy.”
