In 2019, we won the nation's most aggressive climate law in the country, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), which states that New York must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 85%, and be completely carbon-neutral, by 2050. This is a huge victory. Now, we must mobilize to ensure that the just transition is funded by passing the newly introduced Climate and Community Investment Act (CCIA, S4264A), legislation that will help us reach our climate goals mandated in the CLCPA while creating hundreds of thousands of good, green jobs.
As New York struggles with the health and economic impacts of Covid-19, the CCIA will generate $15 billion per year over the next ten years to fund green jobs and a just transition to a renewable energy economy. Who will pay for it? Corporate polluters who have extracted obscene wealth from our communities while leaving many families to clean up the mess and suffer the devastating health consequences of their pollution.
To situate the Climate and Community Investment Act as the must pass legislation for the rest of the legislative session, we are going big with our Climate, Jobs, and Justice Action Week. We have until June 10th to pass this bill, let's seize the opportunity.
Throughout the week of April 5th, climate and labor advocates will be mobilizing across the state demanding bold climate action. To kick off such an important week, we need to make a resounding splash with a huge kick off call. Can you join us on April 5th at 12pm to kick off the week.
