Last month hunters in Wisconsin slaughtered at least 216 gray wolves in just three days — one fifth of their population in the state. This happened because before leaving office, the Trump administration stripped these wolves of their federal protections under the Endangered Species Act.

What is particularly devastating about the hunt in Wisconsin is that it happened during the wolves’ breeding season – which means many of the wolves killed were likely pregnant or mothers to vulnerable new pups. The fact of the matter is that the wolves that were killed last month — an estimated 20% of Wisconsin’s wolf population —would still be helping their species recover if it weren’t for this reckless decision by an outgoing administration.
