State Dems Offer Training for New Precinct Officers

The NC Democrats Training Series will hold an online event this week: "Building Blue: My Precinct Is Organized. Now What?" This first Party Leader training session of the year will cover "everything you need to know to be an impactful precinct chair," according to the NC Dems Website. Two Zoom seminars on Tuesday at 2 and 7 p.m. will offer tools and tips of the trade about building an inclusive precinct, developing relationships within your precinct, and what it takes to get your neighbors to the polls.

Included in the sessions will be tracks for Citizen Advocates, Party Leaders, Candidates, and Elected Officials. The NC Democrats Training Series provides year-round training and organizing guidance to build on the strengths of volunteer leaders in each of North Carolina's 100 counties.

To sign up in advance for the Zoom sessions, click here.  Each of the seminars are expected to be an hour long and will begin at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 30.

GOP 'Big Lie' Collapses Further

On November 7 last year after it was crystal clear that Joe Biden was President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump tweeted in all caps "I WON THIS ELECTION, BY A LOT!" That is the essence of the Big Lie. However, one of the main purveyors of the Big Lie, Sydney Powell, now is arguing in court that "no reasonable person would conclude that the statements were really statements of fact." She essentially is defending herself from a billion dollar defamation lawsuit by saying only stupid people would have believed her when she claimed Joe Biden's election wasn't legitimate. See the NBC News story here.

Dominion, filed an additional  $1.6 billion defamation suit against Fox News on Friday.

NHCDP To Vote On County Party Officers on April 10th

NHCDP will vote for new officers at the County Convention in April. In addition, we will vote on a dozen SEC members. If you are interested in serving or know someone who may want to serve, please contact any of the existing officers. All New Hanover Democrats are welcome to attend the Convention, but only members of organized precincts who were named as delegates at their precinct organization meeting will be eligible to vote at the county convention.

The Officers of the New Hanover County Democratic Party have identified a slate of nominees willing and able to serve in 2021-2023. The slate is diverse and includes both experienced officers and newcomers. The candidates are:

  • Andre Brown - Chair
  • Victoria Garcia Velazco - First Vice Chair
  • Susanne Werner - Second Vice Chair
  • Bandorian Cromartie - Third Vice Chair
  • Brenda Fong - Treasurer
  • April Farr - Secretary

Nominations from the floor will also be welcome at the convention, and the votes of convention delegates will decide the election.

Meet First Vice Chair Candidate Victoria Velazco

Victoria Velazco was spurred to action by the 2020 election. Motivated by the attacks on the Latinx community and the negative political climate, she joined the Biden/Harris campaign, started a Latinx Democratic Facebook Group, and translated and distributed Spanish Blue Ballots. In addition, she and four other Latinx women provided non-partisan voter information to voters in New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick, Duplin and Columbus counties through a Facebook Group Mi Voz Mi Voto (My Voice, My Vote) https://www.facebook.com/votanteSENC  through which they distributed informational videos.

Victoria was born in El Salvador and came to the US as an unaccompanied minor fleeing a civil war. She is a Naturalized US Citizen. She has lived in Wilmington for 29 years and has three children. She is the owner of VIDA Translations, and publisher of Vida Familiar Latina Magazine, which was created as a resource to the Latinx community. She will graduate in May with a Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work from UNCW.
