AFSCME Family,
In April 2020, I received devastating news: I was being furloughed because of the pandemic. I’m a school custodian in Duval County, Florida, and with schools closed they made the mistake of deciding they didn’t need us.
The loss of income I faced, along with increasing medical expenses, put me in a financial hole that even when I returned to work, was tough to get out of. My story is not unique. Many families have been struggling.
That’s why I’m so proud to be part of AFSCME. Our union worked hard to get the American Rescue Plan passed and signed into law by President Biden. The $1,400 stimulus helped me to afford to keep my lights on, make my car payment and put food on the table, making a huge difference for me and my family. And just as important, state and local aid in the American Rescue Plan means I don’t have to worry about being furloughed again.
Do you have a story about how the American Rescue Plan helped you, your family, or the people you serve? AFSCME is collecting stories from members, so share yours today.
I know I’m the first line of defense for these students against the pandemic, and I take pride in keeping them safe. My work is important, and the American Rescue Plan ensures I will be able to keep doing my job.
There are many families like mine that are depending on the stimulus funds in these difficult times. But even more people rely on the services I and my fellow AFSCME members provide every day. The American Rescue Plan means we can keep doing our work without fear of furloughs or even layoffs.
Please take a few moments to share your story about how the American Rescue Plan is making a difference in your life and in your community!
In solidarity,
Shirley Thomas
