The Alaska State Legislature has passed a resolution calling for an end to Joe Biden’s executive order that temporarily halts any fossil fuel drilling in the Arctic Refuge.

John — There’s been a major new development in the effort to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) from fossil fuel drilling:

The Alaska State Legislature has passed a resolution calling for an end to Joe Biden’s executive order that temporarily halts any fossil fuel drilling in the Arctic Refuge.

This new resolution underscores the temporary nature of President Biden’s executive order and is exactly why SEEC member Rep. Jared Huffman has written a bill to provide permanent protection to ANWR.

His Arctic Refuge Protection Act restores protections to the Arctic Refuge Coastal Plain, and importantly, it would stop the oil and gas exploration that Donald Trump was pushing for in one of America’s greatest natural treasures. Will you pitch in to support SEEC members pushing for the protection of the Arctic Refuge?

Donald Trump spent his entire term trying to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, and in the final hours of his administration he succeeded.

Drilling in the Arctic Refuge would be disruptive, destructive, and devastating for local communities and the global effort to combat climate change. Oil spills and accidents would be a near-constant threat, and drilling activity would destroy habitats, disrupt migration patterns, and endanger wildlife, including caribou herds and polar bears. And to address the climate crisis, we need to protect more wild lands that can serve as carbon sinks — not strip protections to drill more oil.

With oil prices at or near record lows, bids in a Trump Administration-led auction for the drilling rights came in at record lows, effectively selling off a wilderness that we should be protecting for the Gwich’in and future generations for pennies.

That’s why SEEC members have been advocating for ANWR every step of the way — and won a temporary victory when President Joe Biden issued an executive order pausing fossil fuel drilling. But now other interests like the Alaska House are pushing back in support of drilling, and we need a surge of grassroots support to protect the Arctic Refuge for good.
