My good friend and colleague, Tammy Duckworth, is up for re-election in what could be a very close race. The chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee has already said he thinks the Illinois Senate seat is in play.

This is a critical race because Democrats’ margin in the Senate is incredibly thin — 50-50 with Vice President Harris serving as the tie-breaking vote.

If Democrats lose even a single seat, we lose the Senate to Mitch McConnell and the Republicans. We really can’t afford to be complacent here — Illinois had a Republican Senator as recently as 2016 and a Republican governor through 2018. This is not a solidly blue state. We have to take this race seriously.

As a combat Veteran and mother, Tammy has broken down a lot of barriers. She was the first Senator to give birth while serving in office and the first to bring her child with her to the Senate floor in order to cast votes. There’s no challenge too great or too intimidating for Tammy to take head-on.

It’s Tammy’s tenacity that has made her a champion for national family leave, comprehensive criminal justice reform, sensible gun safety legislation, and environmental justice. She is a fierce advocate for our troops, Veterans, and military families in Washington.
