Friend,
If you saw its latest email attacking me, the NV Firearms Coalition PAC wants you to believe that universal background checks are ineffective. They also want you to know that these checks are “blatantly discriminatory against the poor and minorities”.
Clearly, these people haven’t been to the neighborhoods that many of my friends and I are from.
Gun violence and the victims that are impacted by it is a story of race and geography. Across America, the homicide rate for black men is 30.7 per 100,000 people, and the rate for white men is 2.4 per 100,000. Data from polling has shown that African Americans are far more likely to know a victim of gun violence or be personally concerned about gun violence than white respondents. The impact even goes deeper into affecting neighborhood home values, the lack of career opportunities in the vicinity of gun crimes, and the prevention of necessary social services being available in the areas that need them the most.
I’m committed to responsible gun safety legislation because it works. We have a moral obligation to prevent deaths and make our communities safe for everyone. Study after study has found that comprehensive gun safety measures can prevent unnecessary deaths and lower gun violence incidences.
I want this to be clear; I have nothing against responsible gun use and ownership. I even own guns myself. Instead, I refuse to believe that there is nothing we can do to lower the number of mass shootings, suicides, and crimes committed with guns in America. Our nation has been in the throes of a gun violence epidemic for decades, and it’s on us to do something about it.
Let’s get to work,
Aaron Ford
