An article [link removed] from pollster Mileah Kromer in The Hill analyzes why Governor Hogan’s overwhelmingly popular COVID-19 response “stands out as the most significant” from the rest of the country.
As the average approval rating of governors has fallen since the beginning of the pandemic, only “a handful of governors have bucked the downward trend,” including Governor Hogan. Among this group, “maintaining public support in Maryland is arguably the greater political feat, as the state presents a uniquely challenging environment for a Republican governor.” Governor Hogan has achieved this by following a balanced approach where “every move is grounded in the recommendations of his team of health experts but shaped by public sentiment and a desire to protect the state’s economy.” As a result, “nearly three-quarters of Marylanders approve of how Hogan has handled the outbreak of the coronavirus,” including “86 percent of Black Marylanders.”
According to Kromer, “Hogan’s strong standing with the public far outdates the coronavirus. His overall job approval ratings haven’t dropped below the 60s in more than six years, and he won reelection by double-digits during the ‘blue wave’ of 2018. Majorities of Democrats, women and Black Marylanders have consistently supported the job he’s done as governor.”

Governor Hogan was joined by First Lady Yumi Hogan for an event in Howard country with Asian American business and community leaders.
In his remarks, Governor Hogan denounced the rise of racist incidents against Asian Americans and announced actions to keep these communities safe, including directing state and local law enforcement agencies to increase enhanced visibility patrols, issuing awareness bulletins to help ensure the safety of Asian-owned businesses, and launching a campaign to encourage victims and witnesses to report incidents to Maryland’s hate crimes hotline. Governor Hogan also called on Congress to pass legislation that improves and fully funds data collection and reporting of hate crimes against Asian Americans.
Governor Hogan argued “our country is being torn apart by those who would seek to divide and separate us solely based on our identities…It’s time for leaders to remind all Americans that what we have in common binds us together as one nation.

Governor Hogan joined 25 governors from across the country in a joint statement on the rise in anti-Asian hate. Earlier this week, Governor Hogan penned an op-ed [link removed] in The Atlantic urging leaders across the country to forcefully denounce the rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans and recommending steps Congress could take to protect these communities.

Governor Hogan called Congresswoman Miller-Meeks (IA-2) to affirm his support for the legitimacy of her election and to encourage her to join the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus.
Even after her election win was certified by the bipartisan Iowa Board of Canvass, her opponent has asked the House Administration to overturn the election result. In a tweet [link removed] after the call, Governor Hogan called for this attempt to overturn the will of the people to be rejected. According to Governor Hogan, “undermining the sanctity of the vote is wrong & outrageous, no matter who does it.”
