John, I have some good news to share with you: This week, a federal court dealt a major blow to the NRA when it ruled that there is no right to carry firearms in public places.

This ruling, made by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, outright rejects the NRA's dangerous argument that the Second Amendment entitles virtually 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 to carry guns virtually 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚. It strikes down the baseless idea that the Constitution grants Americans unfettered access to guns without common-sense restrictions.

This is big, John. This is the kind of progress we need to defeat the NRA so that we can end our country’s gun violence epidemic.

And we need it now more than ever, as our nation heals from the recent spate of deadly, high-profile mass shootings in Boulder, Atlanta, and Chicago. For decades now, the NRA and gun lobby have contributed to America’s gun violence epidemic by insisting that the Second Amendment is unlimited. Why? Because it helps them get rich by selling more guns.

But enough is enough. The majority of Americans, including gun owners, support common-sense gun reform measures that will prevent tragedies. We know that our Founding Fathers never intended for us to suffer such senseless violence as a result of unfettered access to guns, with Americans killing one another with guns at 25 times the rate of our other high-income countries.



Which brings us back to why this week’s court ruling is so important: It reminds us that one of the most effective ways we reduce gun violence is through our nation’s courts. Even when Congress is gridlocked or the White House drags its feet, we can make major progress in our nation’s courts.

That’s why our philosophy at Brady is to tackle gun violence by working across courts, Congress, and communities. There is no single solution to gun violence: It is a multifaceted epidemic, and we need multifaceted solutions.

Brady Celebrates Selection of New California Attorney General





With your help, we sent Gov. Newsom nearly 1,000 messages urging him to appoint an attorney general who is a champion of gun violence prevention. This week, Gov. Newsom heard our calls loud and clear and chose Assemblymember Rob Bonta to serve as California's new attorney general!

We thank Gov. Newsom for his selection and urge Attorney General Bonta to make gun violence prevention his top priority. Over the last 25 years, Brady California activists have passed more than 100 gun violence prevention bills, and California’s attorney generals have played an integral role in this success. Colorado Police Officer Eric Talley was a first responder to the mass shooting at the Bouldergrocery store this week. Tragically, Officer Talley was shot and killed in an attempt to protect those inside the store. We thank Officer Talley for his heroic and courageous efforts to protect his community and country.
