People For Member,
The well of excuses used by the Far Right to argue against passage of the
For the People Act is evidently bottomless and without shame. Just this
week, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi argued in favor of Georgia’s
proposed ban on Sunday voting, saying that Sunday should be to “remember
the Sabbath and keep it holy” – apparently forgetting the times she has
held campaign events on Sunday or the part where she was sworn in as a
U.S. Senator… on a Sunday.^1, 2
The hypocrisy is not surprising, but it continues to expose the depths to
which the Right will go to obstruct the right to vote.

the People Act to protect our voting rights and elections from these Far
Right attacks! >>
Sen. Hyde-Smith’s remarks are particularly troubling given the historic
nature of many Black religious congregations encouraging voting and civic
engagement on Sundays. The longstanding tradition of ‘souls to the polls’
is centered around the very practice of voting on Sundays after religious
service and the attempts to ban Sunday voting serves as yet another direct
attack on the voting rights of the Black community.
Any effort to ban voting on Sundays could severely impact the Black
community’s voter turnout in ways that is quite clear to the measure’s
proponents.
Republicans in Georgia and across the country recognize the difficulty
they face in winning elections if voting becomes accessible to more
people, so rather than strengthen and improve voting rights, they want to
eliminate and restrict them.

the For the People Act right away! >>
Thank you for joining us in standing up to these far right attacks.
In solidarity,
Zach, People For the American Way
