Friend, we should all be outraged and alarmed by the GOP's blatant efforts at voter suppression that were passed into law yesterday in Georgia -- and we can expect more restrictive laws on voting to be passed in the coming months in states across the country.
The bill passed by Georgia Republicans yesterday does the following:
-It makes it harder to register to vote by mail
-It cuts down the number of ballot drop boxes, increasing the long length of voter lines
-It cruelly makes it illegal to give food or water to voters waiting in multi-hour lines
-And perhaps most alarmingly, it gives the state legislature more power to override local election boards, which means politicians can select which communities' votes are valid
This legislation was crafted to make voting less convenient in big cities -- and should people fail to be dissuaded from voting, the bill gives Republicans a dangerous new path to simply throw out the votes in those cities.
We need to call this out for what it is: a modern-day Jim Crow effort at voter intimidation.
I stand with the people of Georgia protesting this disgusting legislation -- and with Americans everywhere fighting against similar efforts in other states.
Yesterday's news underscores the need to swiftly pass H.R. 1 (the For the People Act) into law. This legislation will put in place firm protections for early and mail-in voting, and crack down on blatant voter suppression.
I was proud to vote for H.R. 1 in the House earlier this month, and now I call on the Senate to pass it. Please join me and add your name -- we need everyone involved to protect our democracy.
