Over the past few weeks, I have shared with you the great work that my Democratic colleagues and I have done in the U.S. Senate. The results of the 2020 presidential election are giving us the opportunity to correct course as a country.

A similar movement has happened in New Mexico. As we wrap up the New Mexico legislative session, we are seeing that elections have consequences. Those consequences have translated into great legislation at the Federal and State levels.

In 2020, you joined me in supporting 55 local candidates across the state — with 42 winning their general elections! I also made the difficult decision to engage in primaries that ultimately changed the face of the New Mexico Legislature for the better. All of this work has paid off.

You helped me support these candidates! So, I wanted to share with you some of the highlights and accomplishments that our state legislature made in the historic 2021 New Mexico Legislative Session:

• After nearly a decade of attempts, Representatives Moe Maestas and Javier Martínez were finally able to overcome past obstacles in the NM Senate and pass House Joint Resolution 1. The voters of New Mexico will now have the opportunity to decide whether or not to amend our state constitution and invest a fraction of the state's $22-billion Land Grant Permanent Fund in essential early childhood programming.


• Representatives Christine Chandler and Angelica Rubio, along with Senator Mimi Stewart, worked to pass HB 20, the Healthy Workplaces Act. This landmark legislation is one of the strongest paid sick leave measures in the country, and will protect New Mexico workers for years to come.


• Representatives Matthew McQueen and Nathan Small and Senators Mimi Stewart and Siah Correa Hemphill passed HB 200 to give authority to the Water Trust Board to distribute millions of dollars in the Gila River basin area for much needed conservation projects and repairs, while finally ending the wasteful Gila Diversion Project.


• Senator Linda Lopez championed the successful passage of SB 10, protecting a woman's right to make her own healthcare decisions in New Mexico by repealing the state's antiquated abortion ban.


• Senator Harold Pope Jr. sponsored and helped pass the Purple Star Public School Program and the Military Family Early School Enrollment. These laws will continue to ensure that New Mexico is working with and standing up for military families.


• SB 112, the Sustainable Economic Task Force, was introduced by Senator Mimi Stewart and passed with key support from Representatives Angelica Rubio and Melanie Stansbury. This law creates a task force to develop a plan for a just transition of the state's economy away from fossil fuels and toward renewable sources of energy.
