Yesterday, the state of Georgia passed a sweeping overhaul of its voting laws in order to erect new barriers to the ballot box. They imposed new voter ID requirements, limited drop boxes, and allowed the state to takeover local elections.

All of this was done to further Donald’s Trump Big Lie. It comes after Joe Biden became the first Democratic presidential candidate to win the Peach state in 28 years and after Reverend Raphael Warnock became the first African American senator from Georgia, as he and John Ossoff won their historic elections on January 5th.

Under Georgia law you can carry a loaded firearm in your vehicle without a Carry License but — with the signing of this new law — it is now a CRIME to offer food or water to people waiting in line to vote.

Republicans are not being shy about their agenda. It’s simple: they want fewer Americans to exercise their right to vote in 2022 and they are working overtime to make sure that happens.

There’s no time to lose. We must take federal action to protect our democratic process.

That’s why earlier this week, the Senate Rules Committee held its first hearings on S1, the For The People Act . This legislation includes crucial reforms that will ensure national protections for the right to vote, get dark money out of our elections, end gerrymandering, and so much more.

The state of Georgia is just one of 43 states where Republicans are trying to take new measures to make it harder to vote.

And let’s be clear: They especially want to make it more difficult for people of color and younger voters to have access to the ballot box. These are the voters that participated in record numbers last year and tipped the scales for President Biden in key states like Georgia, Michigan, Arizona, and Wisconsin.

The state legislators who voted to erect these new barriers to voting in Georgia are the 2021 equivalent of the Alabama State troopers who beat John Lewis bloody as he and civil rights activists marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge to demand voting rights.

We can’t — and won’t — let this happen.
