“Action starts the movement” is a new campaign by WildAid in China to inspire action on simple steps we can all take to reduce our carbon footprint through daily choices around meals. Led by popular actor and singer Wang Yibo, our campaign messages attracted over 1.6 billion views with over 776 million impressions on social media and another 885 million views garnered from over 43,000 digital screens and 480 print billboards in 21 cities.

Legal Sales of Ivory in Tokyo Drive Illegal Exports

Elephants are in danger, threatened in the wild by the trade in their ivory. African savanna elephants are endangered and forest elephants are critically endangered, according to the latest assessment ([link removed]) by IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Japan is the world’s last major legal ivory market. Elephants need Japan to join the international community and close their ivory market in Tokyo. The Tokyo government is currently reviewing their regulations and figuring out what steps to take to prevent illegal trade. Upcoming campaign to reduce urban bushmeat consumption in Nigeria

A survey report by WildAid revealed consumption of wildlife or “bushmeat” is widespread in Nigeria’s top cities, regardless of the consumer’s location, age, income, or the product’s potential links to zoonotic diseases. As part of our "Protect Wildlife, Prevent Pandemics" campaign, WildAid and Nigerian Conservation Foundation will launch a public awareness campaign in major cities across Nigeria to change consumer behavior later this year. We will also collaborate with local government agencies to improve enforcement and communication of existing wildlife laws.

React Against the Wildlife Trade

In honor of World Wildlife Day, WildAid launched a series of advertisements in Thailand highlighting the plight of endangered species, a result of poaching to meet consumer demand for wildlife products such as elephant ivory, rhino horns, shark fin, tiger parts and helmeted hornbill casques. The advertisements feature the five species and ask the Thai public to react against wildlife trade by refusing wildlife products and reporting illegal wildlife crime to authorities.

Honoring Wildlife Journalists in Vietnam

WildAid and CHANGE organized the very first wildlife journalism awards in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The VIEWS Awards (Vietnam Information on Environment, Wildlife, Sustainability) is an annual journalism competition to encourage and honor individuals and groups that have excellent reporting and editorial that covers environment, nature, climate change, and development issues in Vietnam. The competition’s theme was A Panoramic View of the Wildlife Crisis, which garnered interest from more than 200 press outlets and reached over 250,000 people on social media.

“Our Beaches Are Their Sanctuary” is a new campaign in Ecuador by Ministerio del Ambiente y Agua de Ecuador, GIZ Ecuador and WildAid Marine to raise awareness and generate support for sea turtle conservation in the country. The campaign video highlights the many threats sea turtles face and encourages each one of us to do our part to protect these magnificent and endangered creatures.
