Hi there,
A very "meta" conversation for your inbox today, John.
Run for Something has built our
entire theory of change on the belief that electing diverse, young progressive candidates to state and local office has a major impact — both on policies to make people's lives better and politically, on which party controls the federal government.
We call that political impact the "Reverse Coattails Effect" -- the belief that down-ballot races can carry top-of-the-ticket candidates to victory by acting as super-charged field organizers doing critical outreach to voters who a presidential or Senate campaign might not talk to. And because they're plugged in locally, they can build strong lasting relationships that will get folks out to the polls.
Now that we've existed through a presidential election,
we finally have the data to see if we're right…or wrong.
According to our research, in partnership with BlueLabs and Kinetic21,
having a contested state legislative race provided anywhere from a 0.3% to 1.5% boost for Biden.
That is HUGE, especially after you account for the fact that Joe Biden won
several critical swing states within this
exact margin -- Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
Ross and I have been saying it for years, and now we know it: Recruiting, training, supporting, and electing diverse young progressives to state and local office is the key to political power. Now, can you chip in to continue making it possible?

Honestly, this study is the most empowering research we've published in some time. The math is clear: Investing can help us win nationally in both the short term and the long term.
We've shown the "shiny" races that the media and establishment are often caught up in winning aren't always the smartest use of the colossal amount of time, money, and energy we put in them.
The smartest investment, the opportunity to get the biggest bang for your buck, is at the foundational level: state and local elections.
That's where Run for Something is putting our focus for the next two years and beyond -- and we're one of the few national organizations exclusively doing so.
If you want to set the groundwork and win big in 2022 and 2024, help elect diverse, young progressives to state and local office with Run for Something NOW. Pitch in whatever you can.
Thanks,
Amanda Litman
