When Trump took office in January 2017, Stand Up America was quickly gathering momentum as progressives became energized to fight back against his dangerous agenda.
As a college senior, I too wanted to make a difference in such a tumultuous time, so I became an intern at Senator Ed Markey’s office. In that small office in Boston, I was one of many interns tasked with answering the phones -- and the phones rang nonstop from when I got in at 9 a.m. to when I left the office around 6 p.m. every single day.
People called about all kinds of things: immigration and stopping Trump’s wall, protecting LGBTQ+ rights, and making sure our healthcare system didn’t collapse. As his staff, we made sure that Senator Markey knew about every single one of those calls -- how many people had phoned in and what they were supporting or opposing. So when I tell you that calling your legislators actually makes a difference, I am speaking from experience.
So, here’s one thing you can do right away. The GOP has just unleashed an avalanche of voter suppression bills around the country, doing everything from making it more difficult to register to vote to making it easier for state legislatures to throw out votes. They’re counting on us, after the long slog of 2020, to let our guard down.
Let’s prove them wrong.
Call your senators and urge them to pass the For the People Act, which would stop the GOP’s wave of voter suppression in its tracks. And while you’re at it, tell them not to let the filibuster stand in the way.

Here’s what happens when you make your call:

Without your calls, your legislators can guess what’s important to you, but they won’t have the concrete data to back it up. The only way they can truly represent you and understand how important it is to you that they take bold action to protect and rebuild our democracy is for you to make a call in favor of the For the People Act.
The For the People Act is the way to make democracy work for everyone -- not just the rich and powerful. It’s a comprehensive bill that would dismantle systemic barriers to voting that were intentionally designed to exclude Black and Brown voices from our political system, enact sweeping campaign finance reform, and fix our systems of voting from top to bottom. In short, it would stop voter suppression in its tracks.
We all stood up against Trump’s damaging policies, unabashed corruption, and disgusting tweets. Now it’s time to stand up for a truly representative, multiracial, and equitable democracy.
You know how it works behind the scenes -- so what are you waiting for? Make a call to your senators and tell them how important fixing our broken democracy is to you.
