Neighbors,

Americans are once again grieving from gun violence. Less than a week after losing eight people to a mass shooting in Atlanta, we tragically lost ten more in Boulder.

My heart and stomach sink thinking that this level of pain and grief plaguing our communities has become normal across our nation. And as much as I want to say I can’t believe something like this happened again, I absolutely can.

I can believe there are no laws restricting the purchase of high-capacity weapons. I can believe gun show loopholes let firearms fall into the hands of people who shouldn’t have them. And I can believe that we have yet to require a background check every time someone buys a gun.

I can believe all those things because time and time again we’ve seen them as root causes of mass shootings -- whether they’re in theaters, schools, synagogues, nail salons or grocery stores. And time and time again, all we get from some politicians are thoughts and prayers.

When we say we’re going to build back better, that means creating an America where mass shootings terrorizing our communities are a thing of the past. It’s time to change our reality and ending gun violence is a necessary part of that.

The United States is the only country where this pattern exists -- and it’s because we have failed American families in passing comprehensive gun safety reform. My hope is that Senators, many of whom participated in a hearing on gun violence earlier this week, finally have the courage to save lives and pass commonsense gun reform bills that are in their hands at this very second.

Ban assault weapons. Close the gun show loophole. Require universal background checks. It’s common sense.

We can’t give up in the fight for safer communities. I know I won’t, and I hope you’ll join me.

Sincerely,

Lori
