Friday of the Fifth Week of Lent
Readings of the Day
As we continue our journey through Lent, some of us remain focused on our personal sacrifices during this season. However, today’s readings discuss the importance of faith in our journey. The readings remind us of the strength we find in God’s love.
In the first reading and the Psalm, scripture reminds us that even when we are tested, God is always with us. While we exist in God’s presence, trials of the real world allow emotions like fear and anxiety to separate us from God. It is easy to forget that when we face challenges by others in our lives and give up hope, God will save us. The Psalm also underscores that when we call on God, we are presented with opportunities for growth in our faith, trust and confidence in God.
Today’s reading from the Gospel of John addresses how difficult it was for people to understand that Jesus was indeed God. As the people prepared to stone him, Jesus questions if they are stoning him for showing them the good works of his Father. As we do our best to build the kingdom of God in our work, we must remember that we might be tested while we care for our neighbors. Let us serve our neighbors, responding to their needs, without any hesitations. As we care for our neighbors, may those who question our work, see God in our neighbors and God in us.
