This campaign has ended, but the fight goes on Dear John, Several days ago, I made a terrible mistake. And for that, I apologize without hesitation. I used a piece of racially charged imagery in a tweet criticizing commentator Candace Owens. What I did was wrong. To everyone involved, and especially to anyone I have hurt with my actions, I am truly sorry. What I did was a display of white privilege. I will never know what pain can be experienced by members of our community when faced with images of the Klan like the one I used. Its use, like all discriminatory rhetoric, has no place in our discourse or our society. What I did was racially insensitive, it was intolerable, and it was wrong. That is why, as of Tuesday night, I officially resigned from all my responsibilities within the Democratic Party, and am no longer running for Congress. To all recurring donors, who have devoted so much to this, know that your prolonged faith is the reason we made it as far as we did, and that there will be no further payments charged. To everyone who has donated, know that I will never be able to show enough gratitude for what you have sacrificed to this team. To everyone who volunteered, and to all who spread our message, know that your will and voice are what helped fuel change in the hearts of so many. To every single person who has supported me over the last two years, I will never be able to repay you for your support. I will never be able to thank you enough for the faith you have shown, for the effort you have given, and for the resilience you have displayed. I will no longer be leading the fight in California’s 42nd District. But there is still a fight to be had. All of the problems we fought against, all of the injustice we sought to overcome, still plague our home today, and other leaders will take up the charge. I said it from day one - Times Change. So do candidates. So do people. But I hold with me the sincerest belief that one day - with the right combination of candidates, team members, and supporters - our representative and the heart of our community will change. Until then, hold tightly to the principles you believe in, and keep your head up, eyes towards the horizon of a better tomorrow.
