 I will never forget the day of January 8, 2011. I was on duty that day as a trauma surgeon at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. There had been a mass shooting that morning in Tucson and a gunman, wielding a semi-automatic, attempted to assassinate Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her constituents who joined to participate in our democracy. Nineteen of our neighbors were shot that day. Six died. My team and I did everything we could to save the lives of every single victim of this tragic and senseless act of gun violence. Me, my friends, my staff — We’ve all seen too much devastation from gun violence firsthand. It’s time that changes. I took an oath to do everything in my power to serve my patients and to save lives. Which is why I wanted you to be the first to hear this and to hear this from me personally: I’m officially running for the open House seat in Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District so we can end the epidemic of gun violence in our country once and for all. I worked around the clock to save Congresswoman Giffords and took care of her until she could be moved to rehabilitation to begin the long process of recovery. During that time, I quickly became friends with Gabby and her husband, Mark Kelly. They are the ones who encouraged me to run for state office in 2014. So I did — and I became the only Democrat to unseat a Republican incumbent in all of Arizona that year. Since then, I’ve been proud to push our state Party and Arizona in a more progressive direction. As a doctor, my job is to heal.
