Hi there,
On MSNBC last week and NPR just a few days ago, I spoke about the time the State Department banned me from working on anything related to the Korean Peninsula. Not because I did something wrong, but because of who I am.
I served our country in Afghanistan and held a top-level security clearance that required me to endure grueling clearance processes, but having the last name Kim and being of Korean descent was apparently enough for me to fail the "loyalty test." That letter told me that my government didn't trust me.
At the time, my experience with diplomatic discrimination and xenophobia made me feel like I didn't belong in government -- but my parents instilled a need to serve my country and my community to the best of my ability.
When I first ran for office, people told me I could not win in a district that is over 80% white and less than 3% Asian. At the same time, national Republican groups and my predecessor ran ads claiming that I'm "not one of us" and dropped racist mailers against me.
It seems likely we'll face more attacks like this soon. But I won't let others define what I am capable of accomplishing and what jobs I am allowed to do for my country. That's why after the events of this past week, I want you to know I remain committed to representing NJ-03 and working to fix the problems our country is up against.
This team proved the political insiders wrong in 2018 and then again in 2020. More than that, you and people across NJ-03 helped to show me, my wife, and our children that we do belong and that you trust us. Thank you.
We have plenty of long days ahead of us to make sure voters know the truth about me but know I am grateful to have your support.
With our first public FEC filing deadline coming up on March 31, I hope I can count on you to stand with me again today to show Washington insiders and the GOP just how much grassroots support is behind this campaign.
If you could give $5, $10, $25, or any amount you can now, it would mean a lot to my team, family, and me -- and it would go a long way in helping us keep the record straight about where my loyalties stand and who I serve. We're still a little under $10k short of our first quarterly goal.
