Cumbria coal mine call-in, #RightToProtest and Bude’s community green projects

Events this month have shown us that there’s still a long way for us to go. But we should celebrate our triumphs too.

As you’ll read below, tens of thousands of you spoke up last week against the proposed restrictions on our right to be heard in the government's new policing bill. Non-violent protest is fundamental to our rights as citizens and it’s been central to so many positive changes in society. Holding our government to account matters.

You, our supporters, continue to rally together to create change. This month, we bring you news of people like you battling for a better, brighter future for all of us. As always, thank you so much for everything that you do.

300,000 PEOPLE TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT THEIR #RightToProtest

The government’s controversial new policing bill threatens our right to non-violent protest and criminalises the way of life for marginalised communities. It could severely damage our ability to protect the planet. Along with Liberty, Amnesty International UK, the TUC and RSPB, we’ve signed an open letter calling for the government to rethink the bill and drop its draconian restrictions.

So far, 300,000 people have signed this letter too – that’s monumental in the fight back against this attack on our rights. Despite attempts to rush the bill through parliament, the public outcry has already forced the government to delay the next stage of the parliamentary process. This gives us more time to push for a complete rethink. If you haven’t already, please do add your name to the letter today.

LET'S END FOSSIL FUEL FUNDING ABROAD – FOR GOOD

You told the government to end public investment in climate-wrecking projects overseas. And, for the most part, it listened. Yesterday, the UK government announced that its new policy on funding fossil fuels abroad will come into force from 31 March.

But it's still investing hundreds of millions of pounds in the climate-destroying Mozambique gas mega-project, even though it would not be allowed under the new policy. Our legal team is fighting back and we need your support to stop this harmful project in the courts.

STOP THE CLIMATE-WRECKING CUMBRIA COAL MINE

Plans for a new coal mine in Cumbria took a dramatic twist earlier this month when Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick decided to "call in" the controversial project. The U-turn means that the final decision will now rest with the government, after a public inquiry.

It was welcome news – both for us and for the local groups that continue to campaign tirelessly against the plans. But of course, the fight isn’t over yet. Will you push the government to reject the coal mine once and for all?
