East Bay DSA Newsletter March 25, 2021
Solidarity is what we want. We do not want to find fault with each other, but to solidify our forces and say to each other: We must be together; our masters are joined together and we must do the same thing.
Mary Harris "Mother" Jones
Comrades,

It's not always easy to see how connected our struggles are. Even despite the year we've had, which placed the same stresses and challenges on people all over the world, many of us continue to mind our own business and carry our own burdens - our troubles at school and work; with our physical and mental health; with our housing and environment.

Perhaps, on this smaller, more personal scale, our problems seem more manageable. So then why are none of us managing? Why do the stresses seem to multiply instead of ever going away? When we start talking and working together, we realize that our long lists of problems have one common cause: capitalism. The solutions can’t be found in our individual rented rooms; it takes collective effort to address the root cause.

The PRO Act—Protecting the Right to Organize—is exactly this kind of effort. This bill will enable and empower worker organizing, punish union-busting tactics, and close loopholes exploited by big corporations. It is a chance at actual relief for the working class, and at something even more important: power in the struggle. Your comrades in DSA chapters nationwide are working hard to win this legislation, and we want you to be connected to this fight, too. Join the national PRO Act training on Sunday and our local EBDSA campaign launch this Tuesday, or sign up for a phone bank as soon as you're ready! Let's seize this power together, for ourselves and for each other.

In solidarity!

(NATIONAL DSA) DSA PRO ACT CAMPAIGN TRAINING

Sunday, March 28 | 10 a.m.–noon
Online via Zoom – RSVP for info ♿️
DSA’s highest national priority for the first 100 days of the new presidential administration is to pass the PRO Act (Protect the Right to Organize), which would strengthen unions, the power of the working class to organize on the job, and our collective capacity to win a just transition to a green economy for all.

Organized by the Green New Deal Campaign and the Democratic Socialist Labor Commission, and endorsed by the National Political Committee, the campaign is an opportunity to unify and grow DSA around a common mission — to end climate catastrophe, powerlessness on the job, and social, racial, and environmental injustice through an emboldened and militant working class movement united across differences.

To learn how to get organizing around the PRO Act in your DSA chapter, attend a session of this weekly skills training for orientation on outreach and action planning!

You can choose to attend one or more of the following sessions:
  • Mar 28, 2021, 1:00 pm ET
  • Apr 4, 2021, 1:00 pm ET

If you'd like to get familiar with the campaign, check out DSA's PRO Act campaign website.

(RESCHEDULED) MEMBERSHIP ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING

Monday, March 29 | 7–9 p.m.
We need your help building a strong and active chapter! Join our next Membership Engagement Committee monthly meeting and learn how you can put your skills to work or grow new ones you never knew you had!

The Membership Engagement Committee was created for the purpose of initiating and sustaining our members' active and healthy participation in the chapter's work. We cannot grow our movement without engaging and fostering growth within our current membership. We strive to grow confident organizers and leaders as well as strong relationships between comrades in our chapter by supporting all committees in their work and creating spaces for learning and camaraderie.

Our committee builds and maintains projects such as (but not limited to) our mobilizers program, planning and execution of chapter socials, new member events, and Organizer's Toolbox Trainings, as well as managing the onboarding of new members. As our chapter grows we need to grow our efforts with it and would love to welcome new members to our committee.

VIRTUAL MASK BUILD

Thursday, April 1 | 7–9 p.m.
Online via Zoom – RSVP for info ♿️
NOTE: --> Please RSVP at the link by this Saturday, March 28 so we provide materials via a touchless kit drop-off at your door! We request that attendees commit to both the April 1 and April 8 mask builds.

Join the Green New Deal committee for a virtual mask assembly party! Vaccines are rolling out, but new, potentially more dangerous variants are taking root. The U.S. continues to experience PPE shortages, especially of high-grade face masks which are one of the simplest, cheapest methods to dramatically cut infections. The failures of the capitalist system are devastatingly clear. But with mutual aid, we can take the safety and wellbeing of our community into our own hands, while developing relationships across the East Bay and building our own organizational power.

We will be assembling hundreds of no-sew, submicron "N85" masks for distribution with community partners. All we need is your help!

This is a great event for new members to attend. Training and materials are delivered to your door (!), no experience necessary. During the build, we'll hang out on an online call together to talk about mutual aid, socialism, and whatever else you'd like to!

Here are three reasons to sign up to talk to a mobilizer:

  2. Answer your questions
Learn more about DSA, the local East Bay chapter, and our different committees and projects.

  3. Get more involved
The main thing a mobilizer will help you with is getting more involved in DSA. Maybe there’s a campaign or project you’re particularly interested in, or maybe you’re a blank slate and you don’t really know what to do. Either way, a mobilizer will help you figure it out.
