Did you know that the richest 1% of Americans own nearly 32% of the nation’s wealth, while the bottom 50% own just 2%?[1]

So, how do we restrain this growing concentration of wealth and help create an economy that works for all of us? The Estate Tax!

Unfortunately, the 2017 Trump-GOP tax scam greatly weakened the Estate Tax. It doubled the amount an estate is exempt from paying taxes on and cut the estate tax rate from 45% to 40%, allowing millionaires and billionaires to hold onto even more of their wealth when they pass it on to their heirs.

Now, Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Jimmy Gomez have introduced the For the 99.5% Act, to strengthen the Estate Tax and help ensure the richest 0.50% of estates pay their fair share. It will raise an incredible $430 billion over 10 years to invest in working families and communities.[2]

This bill was just introduced today. And we’re building support in the American public and in Congress.

The Sanders/Gomez bills restore the already generous estate tax exemption amounts back to the 2009 levels so a fortune worth less than $3.5 million will not be taxed. They also replace the regressive flat 40% top tax rate with a progressive scale―ranging from 45% on estates worth between $3.5 million and $10 million, and up to 65% on estates above $1 billion.

At a time when the richest 400 Americans own more wealth than all Black households plus a quarter of Latino households―and when tens of millions of working people are struggling in the midst of the pandemic―it’s time to level the economic playing field and demand that the very richest families in America pay their fair share.
