Hi John,
Last week, in the aftermath of the Atlanta shooting, I joined a group of AAPI leaders to testify to the House Judiciary Committee about the surge of hate crimes against our community.
I pleaded with them, as many have before, to take action to stop these attacks, saying, “Our community is bleeding. We are in pain. And for the last year, we've been screaming out for help.”
I really hope you'll pay attention to this growing pattern of violence, John, because it's clear too many of our elected officials are failing to listen — or worse, are complicit. For years, Donald Trump peddled racist, xenophobic rhetoric scapegoating Asian communities. As a result, over 3,000 anti-Asian hate incidents have occured over the past year, culminating in the tragic mass shooting in Atlanta.
But while Republican leaders are turning their backs on the problem, my Democratic colleagues and I are getting to work to bring relief. Our businesses are suffering, our community is hurting, and our elders are afraid to leave their homes -- so I've been working overtime alongside my colleagues in Congress to ensure we confront anti-Asian racism at the federal level.
I know that addressing this issue isn't going to be easy. When my resolution condemning anti-Asian sentiment passed the House last year, I got a slew of racist voicemails saying the exact things we collectively condemned in that resolution.
But I've been truly inspired by the outpouring of support from supporters like you in the wake of these tragedies. I know that if we all stay vigilant as we confront anti-Asian racism, we can keep our communities safe.
