Three things we need the Biden administration to do

*********************

Dear Friend,

President Biden is assembling a strong team around him ready to take an all-hands-on-deck approach to tackling the climate crisis and advance environmental justice. Last week, the Senate confirmed 35th generation New Mexican Deb Haaland to lead the Department of the Interior, making her the first Native American, and only the third woman, to serve in this role.

Secretary Haaland’s nomination and confirmation were powered by her stellar bipartisan record fighting for science, natural stewardship, climate action, tribal sovereignty, and by the widespread popular support behind her. This strong endorsement by the public – including from Earthjustice supporters like you – demanding that the Senate act swiftly to confirm strong climate leaders, is critical to moving our country down a path to a more resilient future.

Key agencies responsible for protecting us from pollution now have leaders with strong track records who will uphold their duty to meaningfully address the climate and biodiversity crises and combat environmental injustice. But they’ll never truly succeed unless you help hold them accountable — you and your voice are critical in this effort. Below find more ways to empower our government officials to take the necessary action to protect people and our planet.

Defend and restore national monuments

Former President Trump carved out nearly 2 million acres from Bears Ears and Grand Staircase–Escalante national monuments, representing the largest rollback of federal land protection in the nation’s history. Tell the Biden administration to restore protection for these irreplaceable natural places, cultural resources, and important habitat for wildlife while also helping heal the relationship of the federal government with Native American Tribes.

Tell Biden to restore protections for wolves

In Wisconsin, 216 wolves — 20% of the state's population — were slaughtered in less than three days. The Trump administration delisted the gray wolf in late 2020, stripping vital Endangered Species Act protections and paving the way for states to legally declare open season for wolf hunting. Please join us in calling on the Biden administration to reverse the previous administration’s decision to needlessly endanger wolves across the country.

Protect panther habitat

The 120 to 230 Florida panthers left in the world are hanging on by a thread as they face consistent habitat destruction and lack healthy amounts of genetic diversity. Despite this, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service — the agency charged with protecting endangered wildlife — is taking payments from landowners who are seeking permits to build massive developments and mines in habitat critical to the panther’s continued survival. Join us in demanding an investigation into this concerning arrangement.

The first couple months of the Biden administration have been promising — but there is still much more to do. We’ll need your voice in the fights that lie ahead. Thank you for your advocacy and commitment to protecting people and the planet.

Thank you for staying in the fight,
