Dear John, |
The Passover Haggadah tells us that, in every generation, a person is obligated to see themselves as though they, too, came out from Egypt.
This weekend, Jews all over the world will fulfill this obligation by participating in the Passover Seder. For some, it will mean finally joining with loved ones in person, after a year of isolation caused by the pandemic. For many others, it may still mean coming together virtually. But however one celebrates this year, the Seder will conclude with the same heartfelt prayer, which expresses a yearning of peace, redemption, and hope:
“L'Shana Haba'ah B'Yerushalayim” (“Next Year in Jerusalem”)
We spend almost all of the Seder looking back and recounting the story of the Jewish people’s journey from slavery to freedom, then we end with this prayer that looks forward. This is our opportunity to stop for a moment, consider the year ahead, and offer hope that it will be better than the last. It is also a chance for each of us to pledge to do our part to ensure that better year will happen.
By supporting American Jewish Committee (AJC) this Passover, we can work to fulfill this pledge together. |
Over the past year, as we faced an unprecedented global health crisis, we saw threats against Jews rise, anti-Israel conspiracies spread, and hate and bigotry flourish. But AJC was there, partnering with government leaders and law enforcement officials, building coalitions with allies in other communities to counter hate, and spearheading advocacy and education initiatives to advance our priorities.
With your help, AJC can continue to be there. In 24 regions throughout the U.S. and in countries across the world, AJC is on the ground, fighting antisemitism, promoting Israel’s place within the community of nations, and championing democracy and pluralism.
This Passover, as we conclude our Seders with that age-old prayer of optimism for the future, will you join with AJC and commit to doing your share to help shape a safer, more peaceful world for Jews and all people of good will?

Wishing you and yours a happy and meaningful Passover holiday,
Harriet P. Schleifer
