Getting to 100% Muni

The 14R Mission on a Saturday afternoon

Before COVID, Muni was only delivering about 85% of its promised service hours - a measurement of operators and vehicles on the street every day. In addition to budget issues, there was a tangle of challenges related to hiring and promoting operators and service supervisors. While COVID has put a wrench in budget solutions, SFMTA has been building the infrastructure needed to hire efficiently.

Now, SFMTA is saying that in terms of both budget and human resources, it can commit to 70% of Muni service hours in 2021, and get to 85% of service hours in 2022.

We understand these are real constraints. But Muni is leaving people at the curb now, and many buses are more crowded than COVID capacity would dictate. The demand is there, and will only grow as people get vaccinated and businesses reopen. We can't let Muni service lag behind what we need to recover our lives and businesses.

So how do we get to 100% of service? We have asked SFMTA and SFCTA to make sure all available resources are focused on returning service. We need to give SFMTA the confidence to hire aggressively, and with some guarantee that they won't have to lay off staff if long-term funding isn't secured soon enough.

There was a lot of discussion at yesterday's SFCTA meeting about the return of traffic versus the continuation of the Slow Streets program, but we won't solve traffic if Muni isn't ready to give people an efficient, reliable alternative. Thanks to our members who spoke up at public comment to support a strong return of Muni service! Check out the letter we sent to SFCTA, and stay tuned as we continue to fight for the Muni service we all need.

Deadline Thursday:
Win a Chance to Tour the Subway Monday morning!

We've been hearing a lot about what SFMTA is working on in the subway to make sure we don't have a repeat of August 2020 (or April 2019, or February 2019). Well, here's your chance to see for yourself!

Donate to become a member before 5:00 PM tomorrow, Thursday, March 25, and you'll be entered in a raffle for one of six (6) spots on a tour that will include Duboce, Church, Castro, and the (in)famous Eureka Curve (including the ghost station at Eureka Valley).

Subway Tour start:
9:30 AM, Monday
March 29

This tour is not for the faint of heart. We're planning on about 2 1/2 hours, but it could take as long as 3 hours. We'll be walking on track ballast - basically pebbles - so bring some good sturdy shoes or boots. Bring a flashlight if you have one (we'll bring extra in case).

Of course masks will be required and you must comply with all instructions from our tour guide.

30x30 in the Post-COVID World

Join us next Wednesday for a discussion of where we're going next with 30x30

How has COVID impacted and informed the vision of a network of frequent, rapid routes that connect the city? How does this relate to Muni's temporary transit lanes, and making them permanent? How does it relate to Muni's proposal for a "5-minute network?" What are all these things, anyway, and can we just get our buses back?

We need to continue to work for a strong backbone and foundation for the Muni service we need. Help us figure out how we get there.

April is Membership Month!

Membership Month is when we celebrate YOU, our members, who make our work possible!

We're planning some great events for our members, so stay tuned for coming announcements. We're also rolling out a new website to be a more useful place to get information, to learn about what we're doing, to get more involved and have more impact.

Join before April 30 and our Board of Directors will double your membership! PLUS you'll be entered in a raffle for a tour of Central Subway before it opens! (Details to come about the tour, but it will likely be a weekday in May or June.)
