Friend,
On Monday, a gunman walked into a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, and opened fire, killing 10 people, including the police officer protecting them. Just six days prior, a gunman went on a shooting spree across Atlanta, killing eight people – six of whom were Asian American women. My heart is with each of these 18 families, as well as my deepest commitment to take action.
After the shooting in Boulder, a friend texted me. His parents shop at the very same grocery store now riddled with bullets and broken lives. In essence, he said, "What are you going to do about this?"
He's right to ask that question. For too long, Congress has failed to take the necessary actions to protect our communities. And now, our society is returning to the sadly familiar cadence of mass shootings.
But I refuse to accept defeat against the scourge of gun violence in our country. I refuse to accept that there is nothing we can do to prevent grandmothers, grocery clerks, police officers and our fellow human beings from being slaughtered.
The House has already passed multiple measures for the Senate to take up – including universal background checks to keep guns out of dangerous hands. Now, I'm calling on the Senate to act immediately. It's long past time it does its job and takes the necessary steps to protect innocent lives.
Action is the only answer. Without it, this cadence will only continue.
All of my very best to you and your family during this difficult time. I hope you're able to hug your loved ones close.
There is work to be done,
Chrissy
