The People's Will Should Be the Driving Influence in Politics

In recent weeks, we’ve told you about the influence Big Oil has on politics in California. Nearly 70% of our state’s legislators accept oil money. Yes, it’s shocking.

Each year, CLCV works hard to make political donations from oil and gas companies toxic. It is clear these donations are a catalyst in defeating crucial legislation that protects our environment. Last year we saw how influential Big Oil can be when critical climate and oil accountability bills were stopped in their tracks by legislators who had accepted contributions from oil companies. This is unacceptable. Our leaders should serve at the will of the people.

Corporations have an unfair influence on our elected officials. We must take corporate money out of politics! Please make a contribution to help CLCV push forward bills that make our democracy stronger.

CLCV is always ready to support bills that promote democracy, and fight against corporations’ unfair influence in our elections.  This year, we’re proud to support the Corporate-free Elections Act (Assembly Bill 20). This legislation would prohibit candidates from receiving corporate contributions.  While this bill will be difficult to pass, it’s important to lift up policy that takes a firm stance against corporate contributions.  We must continue to highlight the fact that the top 100 corporate polluters are responsible for 71% of global carbon emissions and seek ways to mitigate their impact.  Bills like AB 20 represent the bold steps needed to remove corporate influence in California elections.
