Because of your efforts, Congress is taking caregiving seriously.

In addition to providing additional funding for Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) in the recent rescue bill, Congressional offices are working on new ways to provide home care for more people across the country. Rep. Debbie Dingell of Michigan recently released a plan for the HCBS Access Act (HAA), which would make home care available for families who need it.

Now, Rep. Dingell wants to make sure that her bill covers as many people as possible, so her staff asked us for stories about how home care could change people’s lives. And now we’re asking you.

Did access to home care help you stay independent in your own home, instead of moving into a facility? Did a home care worker checking in on your parents give you the peace of mind to return to your job? Did a community caregiving program allow your family to enjoy additional years together? Did a community care setting give your disabled or elder loved one a place to spend the day with peers while you were at work?

These stories are important for legislators to hear as they work on refining the HAA. Your story may help them think of a way to solve a problem that they hadn’t considered. Or it could add additional pressure to solve a specific problem that could otherwise go overlooked.

Rep. Dingell is taking this process seriously, which is why she reached out to Caring Across and other allied groups for stories. We want to make sure she hears from as many of us as possible.
