A schoolhouse, a place of worship, a music festival, a cinema, a day spa, a grocery store in broad daylight…
Any American could find themselves in the same nightmare situation that the 18 gun violence victims who lost their lives in the last two weeks in Boulder and Atlanta found themselves in. We all know that, but we push it out of our minds.
Random mass gun violence has become a fact of life in our country — and we cannot and must not normalize it by giving up the fight to change this!
Both gunmen in these shootings purchased their weapons less than a week before the attacks. Tighter background check laws or longer waiting periods could have prevented these massacres and saved lives.
Since the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting that killed 20 school children along with 6 of their teachers, Republicans have blocked our efforts to pass tougher gun legislation. This time must be different.
As we hold the families, friends and communities of those killed in our thoughts and prayers, we must commit to turn up the pressure for action to stop the epidemic of gun violence that has gripped us for way too long.
The House of Representatives has already acted by passing common-sense gun safety measures to keep weapons of war off our streets and out of the wrong hands.
If you are with me, take my pledge to work to end the epidemic of gun violence and to demand Senate action including expanding background checks and a ban on semi-automatic weapons like the AR-15 >>
