People For Member, The New York Times reports: “Donald Trump is no longer center stage. But many conservative activists are finding that the best way to raise money and keep voters engaged is to make his biggest fabrication their top priority.” And the Right Wing isn’t just using Trump’s Big Lie of ‘voter fraud’ in the 2020 election to mobilize their base … they’re using it as the basis for an all-out assault on the right to vote, trying to shut down access to the ballot for millions of Americans, especially Black and brown voters, in order to rig the electoral playing field to their advantage. Meanwhile, they’re also waging an incredibly well funded campaign against our #1 BEST SHOT to stop their attacks on voting: the For the People Act. The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law School is tracking the Right’s voter suppression efforts and notes that “as of February 19, more than 253 bills restricting voting access had been carried over, prefiled, or introduced in 43 states, and the number is rising.” [1] And after analyzing each of these voter suppression bills in the states, Brennan concludes that “the For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1) would thwart virtually every single one”!!! [2] Will you help mobilize maximum pressure on the ground and on the air in key Senate target states, in the media, and online to PASS the For the People Act and save our democracy? From the Heritage Foundation to radical Religious Right groups like the Family Research Council and the Susan B. Anthony List, the Right has come out swinging against the For the People Act. The notorious Koch-founded “astroturf” group Freedomworks, which fueled the Tea Party, has started a new “multi-million dollar National Election Protection Initiative” to fight back against our efforts. And to head it, they hired the Trump lawyer who took part in the infamous call in which Trump threatened and badgered Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” enough votes to reverse the election results in that state! [3] “Written in hell by the devil himself” is how far-right Senator Mike Lee of Utah described the For the People Act – resorting to over-the-top rhetoric to attack as evil a bill that simply aims to protect voting rights, stop extreme partisan gerrymandering, place common-sense limits on Big Money in politics, and prevent corruption by strengthening ethics rules. Recent polling from Data for Progress shows just how out-of-touch the Right’s attacks are: 68 percent of likely voters support the bill, while only 16 percent oppose it – a remarkable 52-percent approval margin, which cuts across party lines and even includes a staggering 57 percent support from Republican voters! [4] The only explanation for the Right’s radical opposition to an overwhelmingly popular bill is that they fear fair elections. Thank you for everything you do to defend democracy. -- Ben Betz, Digital & Organizing
